A conversation series
How the builders built it, and what comes next.
Conversations with the independent operators who built real businesses on relationships and reputation - and are still standing after everything the market has gone through. Each season follows one industry.
Season one is insurance and financial services.
The trade press covers products. We cover the operators.
Most coverage of insurance and financial services is about products, carriers, and regulation. This is about the people.
Each season follows one industry. Season one is insurance and financial services - brokers, advisors, agency founders, and IMO principals who built something real without advertising their way there.
We talk about how they actually built it, what they've learned that newer operators haven't, and the question most of them are quietly working on now: how does a business built on personal relationships keep growing when there's only one of you?
Who it's for
The guests
Independent operators and owner-founders. Usually solo or a small team. Almost always built on referrals rather than advertising. Long enough in market to have lived through something they didn't control, and to have learned from it.
The audience
The same people - plus the newer operators still trying to work out what these ones already know.
The terms, plainly
Everything on both sides of the line.
What this is
- -A conversation. Around forty minutes on camera, informal, unscripted.
- -Fully produced. Editing, clips, handled here.
- -Yours to approve. You see the final edit before anything publishes.
- -Free. Guests are never charged and never paid.
What this isn't
- -Not a sales call. Nothing is pitched during a recording.
- -Not a product show.
- -Not paid media. No sponsorships and no paid guest slots, in either direction.
One honest note
Our host runs a company called MethOpEx, which builds revenue operations infrastructure for B2B operators. Your insights may educate our approach to the services we deliver, and now and again a conversation here becomes a commercial one later. Only if there is synergy, of course.
The host

Juan Camilo Romero
Host · Founder, MethOpEx
I've spent over ten years building brand, communications, and operational programmes for large organisations - multi-market work across eight countries, seven-figure budgets, and the unglamorous business of making complicated things run on time. Today I'm Director of Operational Excellence at a firm in New York.
My graduate research looked at how generative AI is changing the way teams distribute work between people and machines.
I started The Protection Room because of a pattern I kept running into. The best independent operators I met had built something genuinely durable - decades of relationships, real reputation, clients who stayed for life - and almost all of them had reached the same wall: the business ran on them personally, and there is a ceiling on that. It's the most interesting problem I know of, and nobody was talking about it publicly.
I'm also the founder of MethOpEx, where we build the operational systems that let a business grow without requiring more of the person who built it. The show and the work come from the same conviction: what an operator knows is the asset. Everything else is scaffolding around it.
Episodes
Season one is recording now.
Season one · Insurance & financial services · Twelve to sixteen conversations
Recording began in August 2026 with operators from retirement planning, employee benefits, and independent brokerage. Episodes publish every other week, once each guest has approved their edit.
When season one closes, season two moves to a different industry - same kind of operator, different room.
